The shape forms naturally from the radiation of a small open cluster of hot young stars at the center of the nebula, called Melotte 15. Their ultraviolet light excites the surrounding hydrogen, making it glow that signature deep red. Those young stars are blowing the gas outward, slowly sculpting the cavity that gives the nebula its name.
