They're also temporary: the cluster is slowly being pulled apart by the gravity of the galaxy around it, and in another 250 million years or so these stars will have scattered and stopped being a cluster at all. Nearly every culture that could see them named them, the Japanese word is Subaru, meaning "united," which is where the car company's logo comes from.
