The Soul is one half of a pair, it and the Heart Nebula sit side by side in Cassiopeia, close enough that astronomers usually photograph them together. What makes the Soul distinct is its interior: the dark knots and pillars silhouetted against the red aren't empty space, they're dense columns of cold dust and gas being eroded from the outside by radiation from the young stars nearby. As those columns wear away, the densest cores inside them collapse into new stars. It's star formation triggering more star formation, visible in a single frame.
