The Orion Nebula, the middle "star" in Orion's sword, which isn't a star at all. You've almost certainly looked right at it without knowing. Through a telescope it resolves into this, and now it's printed edge to edge across a padded sleeve built to protect a 13″ or 15″ laptop.
Orion is the closest massive star-forming region to Earth, about 1,344 light-years away and roughly 24 light-years across. That proximity is why it matters so much scientifically: when Hubble looked closely here, it found hundreds of proplyds, protoplanetary disks, flattened rings of dust and gas circling newborn stars. Those are solar systems in the act of forming, photographed directly. Looking at this image is as close as we get to looking at what our own system probably resembled before the planets finished assembling.

The Pleiades are young. At roughly 100 million years old they're infants next to our 4.6-billion-year-old Sun, and there are well over a thousand stars in the cluster, not the six or seven most people can pick out unaided. They're also temporary: the cluster is slowly being pulled apart by the gravity of the galaxy around it, and in another 250 million years or so these stars will have scattered and stopped being a cluster at all. Nearly every culture that could see them named them, the Japanese word is Subaru, meaning "united," which is where the car company's logo comes from.

That red is one specific color of light. Hydrogen atoms that have been stripped of their electrons by nearby starlight emit a very particular deep red at 656 nanometers when those electrons recombine, H-alpha, the signature of hydrogen across the universe. Almost everything glowing red in these images is hydrogen doing exactly that, which is why so much of deep space photographs in shades of crimson. The Heart is enormous even by nebula standards: around 200 light-years across, which means the light from one side takes two centuries to reach the other.

You look at your laptop more than almost anything else you own. The Soul is one half of a pair, it and the Heart Nebula sit side by side in Cassiopeia, close enough that astronomers usually photograph them together. What makes the Soul distinct is its interior: the dark knots and pillars silhouetted against the red aren't empty space, they're dense columns of cold dust and gas being eroded from the outside by radiation from the young stars nearby. As those columns wear away, the densest cores inside them collapse into new stars. It's star formation triggering more star formation, visible in a single frame.
