Towels

The blue glow around the stars isn't gas — it's starlight reflecting off a cloud of interstellar dust that the cluster happens to be passing through right now. Like fog around a streetlamp, but cosmic. The hottest, youngest stars in the cluster light up the dust strongest, which is why the blue is so concentrated around them.

The California Nebula on a beach towel — a hundred light-years of glowing hydrogen, stretched across exactly the format it was meant for. NGC 1499 is one of the few deep-sky objects in the entire night sky whose natural shape matches a beach towel: long, narrow, and dramatic. No cropping required — the photograph fills the canvas edge to edge.
What lights it up is a single nearby hot star, Xi Persei, drifting past and blasting the surrounding hydrogen with ultraviolet radiation. That's what makes the gas glow red. The whole structure sits about 1,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Perseus, faint enough that even with a telescope you need a special filter to see it — but on a long-exposure photograph, this is what it looks like.

The Soul Nebula on a beach towel — IC 1848, captured through my own telescope from start to finish.
